May be the beginning of the end again. More copyright violation bullshit thanks to all you assholes that upload cracks, copyrighted videos, etc., and treat this place like "nobody cares".
Quoth Dreamhost,
"You know as well as we do that massive amounts of unlawful distribution is occurring in conjunction with this account. That puts the onus on you, the account owner, to take whatever steps are necessary in order to resolve the matter."
Funny... I wasn't aware of "massive amounts of unlawful distribution"... marginal, yes, but FAR from "massive". I just figured the one or two cracks that slipped in were better than viruses that got Hostfile a "big red X" rating on McAfee. Whoop dee woo hah.
Now Dreamhost is bitching at me about all those torrent files uploaded by a certain ginormous douche who is on the fast track to bannination if Dreamhost feels so strongly about torrent files. Which is kinda strange considering Dreamhost's position on copyright... which in and of itself is strange, considering as though I learned about that blog entry from another part of Dreamhost's reply:
"We are _unlike_ other hosts in that we will give customers the benefit of the doubt - not simply disabling accounts due to one or two MP3s that happen to have been made pubic, in response to invalid DMCA Notifications (Google "Michael Crook DreamHost" some time), etc."
Certainly seems like Dreamhost is taking things a slight bit more rationally than Bluehost did, although they still don't seem to even visit the site. They actually quoted me on files in the data store, instead of file URLs, and also quoted files that AREN'T EVEN PART of Hostfile or any operable site, just leftover files from the ancient days. The good news is, for the moment, "we"'re still here. Bad news is, maybe not for long, or at least in its current incarnation. =(

I think you should make the sharing policy a lot stricter. And if banning torrent files to be able to save the site, fine. If someone really wants to share them with somebody else or store them as backup or whatever then they can save them in a password protected rar or zip file.
Thanks for your work on the site Falcon4!

I used to see those torrent crap being uploaded, I thought you were aware of them...

You can delete torrents after 1 download, torrents are not big and are easy to upload again.
Same for MP3's and .EXE's. If they don't want them to get deleted, they should submit them for approval before sharing them, they can hide them so that they don't get downloaded by random people.

I was aware of them... I just knew they weren't illegal. Dreamhost in their infinite wisdom seem to assume otherwise, which is why I was wondering "why the hell is this guy pointing out how 'smart' they are with copyright law?". *facepalm*
Still haven't heard back from them though...

Dreamhost wrote back and they're still being a lot more sane than Bluehost was. Props to them.
Banhammer has been swung, rules have been updated, and a bit more file-glancing is gonna be happening from now on. Woohoo.
Now, let's see if they're happy with me having deleted ~650-odd torrents and RARs of torrents...

It need be mentioned that Dreamhost expressed their pleasure with me deleting those ~1,000 torrent files and RARs from illegal users. I'm happy too. Now if I can just get those scripts optimized and working... UberUploader kinda fell off the radar when I found that it did the SAME THING that PHP does for long uploads! Aargh!! :(

Please bring back uploading, pretty please, my files are harmless javascripts for my website.

Maybe you can add something to display the files list of torrents and determine with a moderation queue if the use is valid or not. Then again that seems like hard work.
